Employers seek out those that are most qualified for positions within their companies. One of the first steps in assessing the qualification of an applicant is to view their education history. Unfortunately, in an age rife with ‘fake news’ and ‘photo-shop’, there exists fraudulent diplomas.
Malaysia, in particular, has been battling this issue for a while now, and believes that they have come up with a solution. By utilizing blockchain technology, provided be NEM, the Malaysian Ministry of Education will both issue and verify degrees digitally.
Known as e-scroll, this platform will launch this month, out of the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
Graduates from this University will have their diplomas linked to a digital copy on the blockchain, via a QR code. Potential employers looking to hire the individual in the future simply need to scan the QR code, and verify the documents authenticity via the e-Scroll platform.
This quick and easy process replaces a slow and cumbersome method currently in use.
In a message to the public, the Ministry of Education stated,

This new e-Scroll system is not only of benefit to employers, but to educational institutions and students alike.
Malaysia has unfortunately developed a black market for fake degrees. Individuals with no education can purchase these fraudulent documents online. This affects the following parties in a negative manner
o Legitimate graduates lose job opportunities to illegitimate ‘graduates’
o Educational institutions have their reputations tarnished, as fake graduates sully their name through association with fraud, and poor performance
o Often, large amounts of resources are spent in finding an appropriate individual for any given position. Inundated with fake graduates, employers must spend extra time and money sifting through these potential frauds, or risk hiring an inept employee
o Many jobs that require education can directly affect the safety of the public. When an individual not equipped to handle a specific position is hired, public safety becomes a concern.
NEM & the Blockchain
The advent of blockchain based degrees should come as no surprise. Many of the inherent qualities associated with blockchain lend themselves perfectly towards eliminating fraudulent documentation. Through its use, blockchain is able to create non-fungible assets that are easily verifiable. This means that a unique asset can be created – it cannot be duplicated. In addition to this, the blockchain is accessible worldwide.
Furthermore, NEM in particular is a perfect fit for the issue at hand. Integrated into the protocol are means of tracing. This was put to use in past months, as the team at NEM was able to help track down, and quarantine, some of their stolen tokens in the infamous CoinCheck hack.
Authentication and verification of documentation is just one of the many implementations that blockchain is well suited for. Expect to see more programs such as this launch in the future, as various sectors discover how they can benefit through the implementation of blockchain technology.
